Sipping from a Spruce bottle

Fewer bottles, more taps

The 2021 'Cheerio Plastic' piece, updated. The simplest way to cut single-use bottles is a tap, a reusable bottle and a reason to love what's in it.

Back in 2021 I wrote a piece called Cheerio Plastic. A lot has changed since, but the core idea hasn't: the easiest bottle to deal with is the one you never buy.

The bottle problem

1,000,000plastic bottles bought around the world every minute (Euromonitor, 2017)

Only a small share of those were turned back into new bottles. Bottled water is a big part of that, which is a little sad when most of us have perfectly good water coming out of the tap.

Refill, don't rebuy

Here's the stat that stuck with me. Water UK worked out that if one in ten Brits refilled a bottle at home just once a week, we'd save a huge number of bottles a year.

Refill a couple of times a week and the numbers get very big, very quickly. Reusable bottles are everywhere now. Refill stations are popping up in stations and high streets. The habit is there. What's missing, for a lot of people, is a reason to actually enjoy what's in the bottle.

Where Spruce fits

Tap water is great. It's also, let's be honest, a bit boring by the fourth glass. That's where Spruce comes in.

  1. FillYour bottle or glass, straight from the tap.
  2. Tear and tipOne sachet of real fruit, zero sugar.
  3. Top up and sipNo bottle bought. Thank us later.

Small habits, big numbers

None of us is going to fix plastic pollution alone. But a tap, a reusable bottle and something worth drinking is about as easy as doing good gets. Fill it. Spruce it. Love it. Sachet away.
