Magnesium glycinate powder: a better way to wind down

Magnesium is having a moment. Here’s what glycinate means, how a powder drink compares with tablets, and why we’d rather you had a glass of peach.

Magnesium is having a moment. Your feed is full of it, your mate swears by it, and the supplement aisle now has a whole shelf of tubs, tablets, sprays and bath flakes, half of them shouting "glycinate".

Here's the thing: most magnesium comes as a chalky tablet you forget to take. We'd rather you had a glass of peach.

So what is magnesium glycinate?

Magnesium doesn't come on its own in supplements. It's always bound to a partner, and the partner gives it its name: citrate, oxide, malate, or glycinate, which is magnesium paired with the amino acid glycine.

Glycinate is the popular one for evenings because it's gentle. We blend it with marine magnesium from seawater, and add a few friends.

Magnesium contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, to normal muscle function and to normal psychological function. Vitamin B6 contributes to the regulation of hormonal activity.

A powder drink turns a supplement into something you actually want to make. And the glass you want is the glass you remember.

Where Spruce fits

The Wind Down is how we end the day the way we started it: with water. Kettle off, Spruce on. It's not a pill to tick off, it's a soft peach glass to slow down with, and one more glass towards your daily water.

End the day the way you started it: with water.

How much magnesium do you need?

The NHS says men aged 19 to 64 need about 300mg of magnesium a day and women about 270mg, and that most people get enough from a varied diet. A supplement doesn't replace that, but it can help on the days your plate falls short.

Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Don't take more than the recommended daily amount.

Make it your evening ritual

  2. Tear and tipOne sachet into 300 to 500ml of cold water. A little less water for a bolder peach.
  3. Stir, sit, sipPhone down if you can manage it. We won't tell.
